Godfrey Okoye University Enugu Dedicates Land for Groundbreaking DNA Learning Center and Science City
In a landmark move to foster scientific advancement and innovation, Godfrey Okoye University (GOU) in Enugu has donated approximately 6,000 square meters of land at its Ugwuomu campus for the development of the DNA Learning Center (DNALC) Nigeria Science City. This cutting-edge science facility aims to place Nigeria at the forefront of DNA research and innovation on the African continent.
The Science City will house several pioneering centers, including the Center for DNA Forensics and Criminal Investigation (CeDFOCI), Training and Advanced Studies (CeTRAS), Research and Innovation (CeFARAI), Visual Media and Computation (CeSAVIMS), and a Startup Innovation Hub (CeSISTEN). The project is being developed in collaboration with the Enugu State Government, DNALC Nigeria, and the DNA Learning Center in New York.
At the official handover of the site, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke, Vice-Chancellor of GOU, emphasized the project’s potential to impact future generations across Africa. “The University is building for future generations, and not just for itself. The engineers and everyone involved should view this project as a service to God and humanity,” he stated.
Mr. Michael Okoro, Deputy Director of DNALC Nigeria and Project Coordinator, shared insights on the ambitious Science City, noting that it will encompass six specialized sections, including a DNA Centre for Forensic and Criminal Investigation and a Public Health Intervention Center. Phases one and two of the project have been successfully completed, with the third phase set to begin in October 2024 and the installation of full facilities targeted for April 2025.
Prof. George Ude, Director of the Centre, reiterated the center’s commitment to making groundbreaking contributions to education, science, and innovation, stating, “This project has the potential to revolutionize research and learning in Nigeria and beyond.”
With this forward-thinking initiative, Godfrey Okoye University is positioning itself as a leader in scientific research and innovation, creating a legacy that could influence scientific progress across Africa for years to come.
