Godfrey Okoye University Launches Start-up Incubation Centre, Advocates for Solution-Oriented Education

The Vice Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University Enugu, Reverend Father Professor Christian Anieke, has asserted that universities should focus on finding solutions to societal issues rather than merely complaining about them. He made this statement during the inauguration of the university’s Start-up Incubation Centre, part of the Directorate of Entrepreneurship.

Reverend Father Professor Anieke emphasized that it would be absurd for any university to complain about problems. Instead, institutions should aim to meet the needs of the people. He proudly announced that Godfrey Okoye University had secured approximately 200 million Naira in grants from various institutions to execute projects beneficial to society.

Addressing the issue of funding, Professor Anieke criticized the exclusion of private universities from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), despite their contributions to the funds distributed to government-owned institutions.

In a significant development, Professor Anieke revealed that Godfrey Okoye University had received full approval to offer courses in Nursing and Midwifery starting from the 2024-2025 academic year. Furthermore, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has granted full accreditation to the university’s College of Medicine, allowing its medical students to take their second MB examinations.

Speaking on the newly inaugurated Start-up Incubation Centre, Professor Anieke explained that it was established in response to the Enugu State Governor’s call for innovative approaches. He stressed that entrepreneurship at the university is integrated across various courses, providing students with ample employment opportunities upon graduation.

Mr. Christopher Chidiebere Uwakwe, Director of Entrepreneurship at the university, described the Incubation Centre as a beacon of hope and opportunity for young people, aiming to foster an entrepreneurial spirit among both students and the broader community. He expressed gratitude to the Vice Chancellor and university management for their support in realizing the GO Start-up Incubation Centre.

The event saw goodwill messages from the Enugu State Government, represented by Special Adviser on Digital Economy and MSMEs, Arinze Chilo-Offia, who assured of the government’s partnership in entrepreneur training. Additional messages of support came from the university’s Foreign Liaison Officer, Meggy Kantert, and self-employed graduates of the institution.

The inauguration was attended by the university’s principal officers and numerous students.
