Godfrey Okoye University Students Excel in Hackathon Competition

Three students from the Department of Computer Science at Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, have garnered top honors in the university’s ICT coding competition, the “Hackathon Competition Alert.” Organized by the Directorate of Competition, this event showcased the innovative talents of the participants.

Ogbe Somtochukwu emerged as the overall winner of the contest, securing a three-month supply of internet data and the opportunity for his ideas to be incubated by the university’s Directorate of Entrepreneurship’s Incubation Centre. Obiano Chukwuemeka Isreal clinched the second position, while Arinze MaryRose took third place.

The competition saw the participation of about 15 final-year computer science students, who engaged in a fiercely contested intellectual battle. The event was divided into two segments: a presentation of their developed apps and the actual deployment of these apps.

In his address, the special guest of honor, Reverend Father Professor Christian Anieke, who is also the Vice-Chancellor of the university, lauded the competition as a significant innovation for a sustainable future. He emphasized the importance of competition in human development, stating, “Human beings were created to compete in all spheres of life. A person can only retain their identity if they can compete and make an impact that others will recognize even after their lifetime.”

The event was well-attended by top officials of the university, reflecting the institution’s commitment to fostering creativity and innovation among its students. The Hackathon Competition Alert not only highlighted the technical skills of the students but also underscored the university’s role in preparing them for future challenges in the tech industry.
