New Era of Medical Excellence: Godfrey Okoye University Inaugurates Pioneer Board for College of Medicine

In a landmark ceremony that signals a transformative chapter for medical education in Nigeria, Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI), Enugu, officially inaugurated the pioneer Board of its College of Medicine on Monday, January 26, 2026.

The event, characterized by a vision for global competitiveness, brought together the university’s top hierarchy and distinguished medical professionals to chart a course for the four-year-old college.

The newly inaugurated board is chaired by His Royal Majesty, Igwe Prof. Dr. Christian Nwachukwu Okeke, the Eze Osuofia I of Obinofia Ndiuno Ancient Kingdom and Pro-Chancellor of the University. The board comprises a multidisciplinary team of experts:
• Prof. Dr. Christian Anieke (Vice-Chancellor, GOUNI) – Alternate Chairman
• Prof. Dr. Frank Akpuaka (Provost, College of Medicine)
• Prof. Dr. Amechi U. Katchy (CMD, GOUNITH)
• Prof. Dr. Iheuko Sunday Ogbonnanya (Dean, Basic Medical Sciences)
• Prof. Dr. Chidi Uhuegbu (Dean, Natural Sciences and Environmental Studies)
• Dr. Peter Nuener (Consultant Gynaecologist, Linz, Austria)
• Prof. Chika Ugochukwu (Nursing Sciences)
• Dr. Peace Chidi Ike (Registrar, GOUNI) – Secretary
• Deans of Basic Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy & Medical Rehabilitation.

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Chairman of the inauguration ceremony, Prof. Batho Okolo, delivered a stirring opening address, emphasizing that the board’s appointment was a rigorous selection based on proven integrity.
“We are at a time where healthcare systems face emerging diseases and workforce shortages. Effective governance has never been more vital,” Prof. Okolo stated. He defined the board’s mandate as a “demanding responsibility” to shape a college where “science is guided by ethics.”

Prof. Okolo highlighted the college’s rapid ascent, noting that despite being only four years old, students achieved a remarkable feat in their first external 2nd MB exams, securing nine distinctions. “This board was not chosen randomly; it took a lot of time checking backgrounds to ensure we meet the expectations of the promoter,” he added.

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor and Alternate Chairman, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke, expressed gratitude to the university’s promoter, Bishop Callistus Onaga, for approving the board.

Tracing the college’s history since its 2022 Senate approval, Prof. Anieke revealed that the institution has grown to over 450 students. He announced the expansion of the medical faculty to include a Bachelor of Nursing Science (introduced in the 2024/2025 session) and teased the upcoming first clinical accreditation scheduled for the next few weeks.

The Vice-Chancellor also spotlighted the university’s technological edge:
“Our ultra-modern DNA Learning Center (DNALC) is now open for commissioning. It is the biggest in Africa and puts GOUNI on the global map as a leader in biological sciences.”

Accepting the mantle of leadership, Igwe Prof. Dr. Christian Nwachukwu Okeke described the inauguration as an invitation to the world to witness GOUNI’s maturity. He stressed that for the college to remain “different from the rest,” it must be quality-driven and robustly funded.

“We undertake to support academic excellence and strengthen research to address the health needs of our community,” the Chairman declared, promising to lead with integrity, openness, and collaboration.

The Board of Trustees concluded the ceremony by outlining the strategic “Terms of Reference” that will guide the board’s tenure:
• Resource Mobilization: Ensuring the financial health and growth of the college.
• Policy and Oversight: Maintaining strategic direction and ethical standards.
• Academic Standards: Ensuring top-tier quality in teaching and research.
• Staffing: Prioritizing the recruitment of multi-talented personnel who embody excellence.
• Public Relations: Building the college’s brand and community engagement.

As the ceremony concluded, the atmosphere was one of palpable optimism. With a new board at the helm, Godfrey Okoye University’s College of Medicine appears poised to redefine medical training in West Africa.
